For example:
A filter labeled 16×25×4 is usually closer to something like:
15.5 × 24.5 × 3.75 inches
Manufacturers make filters slightly smaller on purpose so they fit properly.
This means if you measure your filter with a tape measure and the numbers don’t match what’s printed on the filter, nothing is wrong. That’s completely normal.
Common Example
Label says: 20×25×1
Actual size: about 19.5 × 24.5 × 0.75
This small difference is intentional and expected.
When buying replacements, always use the printed size (nominal size) — not the exact tape-measure dimensions.

How To Measure Your Air Filter (Step-by-Step)
If the label on your filter is missing or faded, don’t worry. You can measure it yourself in just a few minutes.
You only need a tape measure and the old filter (or the filter slot).
Step 1 — Turn Off Your HVAC System
Before removing the filter, turn the thermostat off so the system doesn’t pull air while the filter is out.
Step 2 — Remove the Existing Filter
Slide the filter out slowly and look for the size printed on the frame. If the label is readable, you’re done — that is the size you should buy.
If the label is missing, continue to the next step.
Step 3 — Measure Length and Width
Use a tape measure and measure the filter from edge to edge.
Measure:
• The long side (length)
• The short side (width)
Write the numbers down in inches.
Step 4 — Measure Thickness
Now measure how thick the filter is.
Common thicknesses are:
• 1 inch
• 2 inches
• 4 inches
• 5 inches
Thickness is critical — never guess this number.
Step 5 — Round to the Nearest Whole Number
Filters use nominal sizing, so round your measurements to the nearest whole inch.
Example:
15.5 × 24.5 × 3.75 → buy 16×25×4
